How to Choose BMS in Lithium Battery?

BMS in lithium battery, which is a lithium-ion battery system equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS), is a core component of modern Energy Storage Systems (ESS). The BMS integrates intelligent electronic control units to monitor and manage the lithium battery pack in real-time, precisely controlling the charging and discharging process. It effectively prevents risks such as overcharging, over-discharging, short circuits, and temperature anomalies, ensuring the long-term stable operation of the energy storage system.

The introduction of BMS not only significantly improves the efficiency and safety of lithium batteries but also becomes an important indicator for measuring the reliability and economic efficiency of energy storage stations. With the large-scale application of renewable energy (such as photovoltaics and wind energy) and the rapid growth of energy storage demands like grid frequency regulation, peak shaving, and backup power, the importance and market value of BMS are increasingly prominent.

Main Functions of BMS in Lithium Battery

Intelligent Power and Safety Monitoring Function

The lithium battery with BMS can monitor key data such as voltage, current, SOC (State of Charge), SOH (State of Health), and temperature of the energy storage battery pack in real-time. It accurately grasps the remaining capacity and available energy of the storage system, ensuring grid power supply stability and significantly reducing the risk of safety incidents like thermal runaway, fire, and explosion due to battery anomalies.

Energy Storage System Operation Data Recording and Positioning Function

In large energy storage stations or distributed energy storage projects, the BMS in lithium battery can meticulously record operating statuses, including energy input-output curves, geographical locations, historical operating traces, and more. It provides comprehensive data support for system operation and maintenance, significantly enhancing the efficiency of remote monitoring and fault diagnosis.

Intelligent Early Warning and Alarm Reminder Function

When the energy storage system encounters situations such as overheating, over-voltage, over-current, or abnormal charging and discharging, the lithium battery with BMS issues early warnings through local alerts and remote APP/cloud platform notifications. It supports rapid linkage to cut off the charging and discharging circuits and automatically activates the fire protection system, effectively reducing the probability of accidents and ensuring the continuous safe operation of the energy storage facilities.

Safety Protection and Anti-Theft Function

For distributed home energy storage systems or commercial microgrid projects, the BMS in lithium battery supports intelligent anti-theft alerts. When the storage unit is illegally disassembled or moved, the system can timely alert and lock the device location through GPS positioning and remote monitoring, maximizing the prevention of storage equipment theft or unauthorized access.

Intelligent Battery Locking and Remote Control Function

Energy storage systems achieve intelligent lock control through the BMS in lithium battery. When abnormal operations or external intrusions are detected, the lithium battery with BMS can remotely lock the battery system, prohibit charging and discharging behaviors, and allow authorized personnel to remotely unlock or reset it, effectively enhancing the safety management level of the energy storage system.

How to Choose Lithium Battery With BMS?

  • Calculate the load current: Based on the load, calculate the current, including your charging current and discharging current. This is the basis for selecting BMS lithium batteries.

  • Pay attention to the charging current: Many people purchase BMS lithium batteries with very high protection current but do not pay attention to the charging current. Since the charging rate of most batteries is 1C, your charging current must not exceed the rate of your battery pack. Otherwise, it is very likely to overcharge the BMS in lithium battery, damaging the battery.

  • Batteries compatible with BMS lithium batteries: If the battery discharge rate is 1C and the lithium battery with BMS you choose is loaded too high, exceeding the 1C rate, it can easily damage the battery.
