Imagine a data center in the middle of the night. Rows of servers hum quietly, processing transactions, storing files, running critical applications. Suddenly, the main power fails. That's when the UPS (uninterruptible power supply) kicks in — batteries take over instantly, keeping everything alive.

But what if those UPS batteries themselves become a danger?

You've heard the news: a battery room catches fire. Flames spread to server racks. Millions of dollars in equipment turn into ash. Business stops. Reputation burns.

That nightmare is called thermal runaway — a chain reaction inside a battery that leads to fire or explosion.

Not all batteries suffer from this. A Nickel Zinc Battery (often written as NiZn battery) is built to never go into thermal runaway. Let me explain why — in plain English, with a focus on data center UPS applications.

## First, what is thermal runaway?

Let’s start with a simple image. Imagine a campfire. You add wood, the fire grows. The heat from the fire dries out nearby wood, which then also catches fire. Soon, the whole pile is burning, and the fire keeps getting hotter and bigger all by itself. That self-feeding cycle is exactly what happens inside a battery during thermal runaway — but much faster and more violently.

Inside a typical rechargeable battery (like the lithium-ion type used in many UPS systems), there are three key ingredients that make this cycle possible:

A flammable liquid — called an electrolyte. It soaks everything inside the battery, like gasoline soaking a rag.

Oxygen — some battery parts can release oxygen when they get hot. Fire needs oxygen to live.

Tiny metal spikes — over time, metal grows into sharp, needle-like shapes that can pierce internal walls and cause sparks.

For a data center UPS, this is a disaster scenario. The UPS battery room sits right next to server racks worth millions. If thermal runaway starts, flames can melt through cabinets, destroy network cables, and trigger fire suppression systems that dump gas or water on everything — often killing the very equipment the UPS was supposed to protect.

That’s why engineers look for batteries that simply cannot enter this self-feeding cycle. A Nickel Zinc Battery is one of them.

Now let's see why a Nickel Zinc Battery stops this before it starts.

## Reason 1: Water

Most lithium-ion batteries employ an organic electrolyte. If the battery overheats, this electrolyte can catch fire.

The Gerchamp nickel-zinc battery employs an aqueous electrolyte. It is important to note that the water in this electrolyte is not a freely flowing liquid but is firmly adsorbed by a special separator. The entire battery interior remains in a solid state, and this aqueous electrolyte itself does not burn.

Think of it this way:

Would you rather have a bucket of gasoline or a bucket of water next to your server racks?
Nickel Zinc Battery gives you the water option.

For a data center UPS, this is huge. UPS batteries sit inside battery cabinets or rooms for years. If one cell fails, a lithium system might start a fire. A Nickel Zinc system simply gets warm, No flames, No risk to the racks.

## Reason 2: No extra oxygen to feed a fire

Fire needs oxygen. Some battery chemistries actually release oxygen from their internal materials when they overheat. That oxygen turns a small spark into an inferno in seconds.

Gerchamp Nickel Zinc batteries use a positive material that holds onto its oxygen tightly. Even under extreme conditions — overcharging, high temperature, physical damage — it does not release extra oxygen.

No extra oxygen means no fire acceleration. Even if a short circuit happens inside the battery, the reaction stays mild. Your data center stays safe.

## Reason 3: No sharp metal needles

This is the most interesting reason — and the least known.

In lithium batteries, tiny metal needles called dendrites grow on the negative side during charging. These needles are sharp — like microscopic knives. They can pierce through the separator inside the battery, causing a short circuit. That short circuit creates a hot spark. And with flammable liquid and oxygen nearby, you get thermal runaway.

Gerchamp Nickel Zinc batteries use zinc metal on the negative side. Zinc can also form small crystals, but they rarely puncture anything. Even if they do, the inside is filled with water, not lighter fluid. A short circuit might cause some heat, but not a fire.

## Why this matters for your data center

If you manage or own a data center even a small server room, UPS battery safety should be a top concern. A fire in the battery room can:

- Burn server racks worth millions

- Trigger fire suppression systems that damage all equipment

- Shut down operations for days or weeks

- Put your team at physical risk

Gerchamp Nickel Zinc batteries offer a proven alternative. They deliver strong, reliable backup power without the thermal runaway danger. You can install them in battery cabinets close to servers, charge them normally, and sleep better knowing they won't catch fire.
