## What Is Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring?

Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring is one of the important functions of a Battery Monitoring System. It continuously measures and analyzes changes in a battery's internal impedance, helping operations and maintenance (O&M) personnel understand the performance status of UPS batteries.

Battery internal resistance represents the degree of obstruction to current flow inside the battery. When current flows through a battery, internal resistance affects the battery's terminal voltage response and actual output capability.

For UPS batteries, internal resistance is one of the important indicators for judging battery performance. Even if a battery still has a certain capacity, if its internal impedance continues to rise, it may be unable to maintain stable output under high-load conditions.

Therefore, understanding battery status cannot focus only on "how much charge remains." It must also consider "whether the battery can effectively deliver that energy."

This is also the important value of Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring. By continuously monitoring internal resistance trends, a Battery Monitoring System can help O&M personnel more comprehensively understand changes in battery performance and, together with other parameters, judge battery operating status.

## Why Is Internal Resistance So Important for UPS Battery Performance?

UPS batteries usually remain in standby or float charge for long periods and only need to quickly take on load when main power is abnormal. During this process, the battery needs to:

- respond quickly to load demand;

- provide a large discharge current;

- maintain a stable output voltage.

Internal resistance directly affects this process.

When a battery discharges, terminal voltage drops due to internal resistance. The basic relationship is:

Voltage drop = discharge current × internal resistance

This formula reveals a key issue: the larger the current, the more obvious the voltage loss caused by internal resistance.

Take a specific scenario as an example: assume a 12V battery in a UPS system needs to discharge at a 10C rate, meaning the discharge current is approximately 100A (using a 10Ah battery as an example). If the battery's internal resistance is 3 mΩ, the voltage drop is:

100A × 3 mΩ = 0.3V

At this point, the terminal voltage is approximately 11.7V, which is still within an acceptable range. However, if the battery ages and internal resistance rises to 10 mΩ, at the same 100A discharge:

100A × 10 mΩ = 1.0V

The terminal voltage drops to approximately 11.0V. If internal resistance rises further to 20 mΩ, the voltage drop will reach 2.0V, leaving a terminal voltage of only approximately 10.0V.

This means:

A battery may still have a certain remaining capacity, but due to increased internal resistance, it may be unable to provide stable output as expected when a critical power event occurs.

## Why Does Battery Internal Resistance Change?

Battery internal resistance is not a fixed parameter.

As battery operating time increases, internal chemical states, material changes, and long-term operating conditions all affect internal resistance.

Factors affecting internal resistance changes include:

- battery aging;

- long-term operating temperature;

- charge/discharge history;

- battery operating environment.

Therefore, a single internal resistance measurement can only reflect the state at one point in time, while continuous monitoring of internal resistance trends can help O&M personnel understand whether battery performance is changing.

For critical UPS applications, trend data is usually more valuable for reference than a single measurement result.

## What Can Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring Help Identify?

The value of Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring is not only in obtaining an internal resistance value, but more importantly in understanding battery change trends through continuous data accumulation.

**Identify Changes in Battery Performance**
As battery status changes, internal resistance may show a continuous upward trend. Through long-term monitoring, O&M personnel can observe whether internal resistance remains stable or whether abnormal changes occur.

When internal resistance changes occur together with changes in other parameters, such as voltage, temperature, current, or SOC/SOH data, they can provide more complete information about battery status.

## Identify Consistency Differences Between Batteries

In UPS battery systems, multiple cells are usually connected in series to form a battery string. Even if the overall battery string voltage appears normal, performance differences may still exist between different cells.

Cell-level internal resistance monitoring can help identify:

- whether certain cells have internal resistance significantly higher than other cells;

- whether performance inconsistency occurs within the battery string;

- whether there are batteries that require further inspection.

This cell-level visualization capability is difficult to achieve continuously with traditional manual testing.

## Support Predictive Maintenance

Traditional battery maintenance usually uses periodic manual testing to obtain internal resistance data. This method can provide valuable information, but it usually has two limitations:

First, testing can only reflect the state at one point in time;

Second, the process of change between two tests cannot be continuously observed.

In contrast, Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring can continuously record internal resistance trends.

Through long-term data recording, Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring can help O&M personnel shift from:

"Is this battery normal now?"

to:

"Is this battery's performance changing, and does it need attention in advance?"

Combined with parameters such as voltage, temperature, current, and SOC/SOH, it can form a more comprehensive analysis of battery status.

## How Does Gerchamp Perform Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring?

Gerchamp Battery Monitoring System supports cell-level internal resistance monitoring, helping O&M personnel continuously understand changes in UPS battery performance.

The system supports:

- Cell Internal Resistance Measurement Range: 50–65,535 μΩ

- Accuracy: ±2%

- Resolution: 1 μΩ

Through cell-level internal resistance measurement, the system can help identify performance differences between different batteries and perform comprehensive analysis in combination with other battery operating parameters.

In addition to internal resistance monitoring, Gerchamp Battery Monitoring System also supports multi-dimensional data collection such as voltage, temperature, current, and SOC/SOH, enabling O&M personnel to understand UPS battery status from multiple angles.

For data centers and other critical infrastructure, continuous Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring can help O&M personnel manage backup power systems more proactively—not only understanding the current battery status, but also observing how battery performance changes over time.

## FAQ

## What Is Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring?
Battery Internal Resistance Monitoring is the process of continuously measuring and analyzing changes in battery internal impedance to help O&M personnel understand battery performance status and long-term change trends.

## Why Do UPS Batteries Need Internal Resistance Monitoring?
UPS batteries need to quickly provide backup power when main power is abnormal. Changes in internal resistance affect battery output performance under high-load conditions, so continuous internal resistance monitoring can help determine whether the battery has reliable power output capability.

## Does Increased Internal Resistance Mean the Battery Is Definitely Faulty?
Not necessarily.

Increased internal resistance may indicate that battery performance is changing, but it needs to be judged comprehensively in combination with other parameters such as voltage, temperature, current, SOC, and SOH. For example, at low temperatures: when temperature decreases, electrolyte conductivity decreases, the electrochemical reaction rate slows, and internal resistance increases significantly. After temperature recovers, internal resistance usually falls back.

What Is the Difference Between Battery Internal Resistance Testing and Internal Resistance Monitoring?
Internal resistance testing usually measures at a certain point in time, while internal resistance monitoring can continuously record change trends, helping O&M personnel understand how battery status changes over time.

## Can Internal Resistance Monitoring Predict Battery Life?
Internal resistance changes can serve as an important reference for evaluating battery status, but they cannot predict battery life alone. More accurate judgment requires combining multiple battery parameters and historical operating data.

## Why Is Internal Resistance Suitable for UPS Battery Status Analysis?
Because UPS batteries need to provide relatively high power output in a short time, and internal resistance affects the battery's voltage response and output capability under high-current conditions, it is one of the important parameters for evaluating UPS battery performance.
